Computer Graphics/Games

Here is a really good book about computer graphics and game programming.It is called (oddly enough) Programming Linux Games, by John R. Hall. It is the best book I have ever seen on the subject. If you want to learn how to program video games, read it. I would suggest reading lightly through chapters 1-3, and then really paying attention to chapter 4.

GIFS

The most important thing to read when you are dealing with GIFS is the GIF Specification.
Here is a file that explains the LZW compression.
I wrote a program in C to display GIFS. You can look at it as an example.
